london tube

My memories are fresh as i am on my way back home after a week long trip to london. I am penning down here the experience and opinion on london.

London is a very multi-ethinic city... my workplace had people from 7 different countries.. like one guy's gf is chinese and father from west-indies and mother from ireland. People can be seen wearing a huge variety of clothes. May also be due to presence of lot of travellers. but some office going crowd were also good at their dressing.. a wide variety of dresses by boyz or girls.. colorful and refreshing one to eyes. Intially I was uncomfortable with the short and revelaing clothes by ladies, but just got used to it in a few days.

100's of restaurants, i had some food varieties like mexican, japanese, arabic, thai, chinese, sushi, hungarian, itlaian. I did not try any indian food btw.One thing they all have adapted from british culture is wine. Wine has become an esential part of the dinner. i had an agenda to try all varieties of scotch ..but later settled in good old style wines and ciders(a type of beer).

What i did not like is the priority for wearing a suit. Lot of people were observed to judge people by their dressing style. A suit and a pair of formal shoes was always expected whenever i was dining in any good restaurant. Got convinced that "bread" is infact one of the top 10 inventions of modern world. Unless in india where bread is only available on packets, the western society has really experimented in bread and has come with a wide variety of foods related to bread. So they all love bread.

Lot of gardens in london, saw a lot of people either running or cycling to their workplace. infact some were wearing a suit, half pant and cycling.

Got really excited about world war 2. Till now it was just a 4 page short passage in my 9th class history book. Almost all of britain's monuments has their history related to the WW2. the war room, the military house, buckingham palace, the wesminster road to dedicate women's involvement in WW2, st paul's cathedral for american and brtish soldiers. One thing i am going to do is spend sometime to read about WW2 and churchill before i lose interest in them.

Little confusused about the so called "public display of affection" by young couples...smooching, pressing the butts. Do not consider this question as my desperation attempt to protest. But my german gave an opinion that, its just a part of an culture but...

Last but not the least the tube and the oyster card. A 20 pound card is perfect for a london traveller to go to any place. The condolsence meet at trafalgar suquare an Michael jackson's death was worth witnessing.

Bye bye london

Nice to read your London experience.

Public display of affection is okay... like the dresses, I guess you'll get accustomed to it after seeing for sometime :-)

I don't mean to say it's a good thing or bad thing. Just that it's a culture. Some places it's acceptable, elsewhere it's offending and vulgar. Need to honor both of them.

I guess multi-ethnicity was refreshing. And thats a lot of food variety you tried. Awesome. Bevda in you, must have been very happy. :P

Whats "the tube and the oyster card"?
